Kim et al developed the Korea Dementia Comorbidity Index (KDCI) whcih can help to identify a patient at risk for developing dementia. The authors are from Dankook University, Eulji University, and Ajou University in the Republic of Korea.
Diagnoses were classed as the primary diagnosis and comorbid conditions. Comorbid conditions were coded using ICD-10.

comorbidity index =
= SUM(points for all comorbidities based on ICD10 code)
Interpretation:
• minimum comorbidity score: 0
• maximum comorbidity score: depends on the number of comorbidities coded
• The higher the index the greater the risk of developing dementia, at least in Korea.
• One issue in scoring is the number of comorbid conditions recorded and the number of comorbid conditions allowed for each ICD10 group.
