Leptocytes are an uncommon finding in peripheral blood smears.
Features of a leptocyte:
(1) flat, thin and wafer-like
(2) hypochromic with a large area of central pallor and a thin rim of hemoglobin at the periphery
Conditions associated with leptocytes:
(1) obstructive liver disease
(2) thalassemia (hemoglobin H)
