A leukemoid is a severe secondary leukocytosis.
Criteria for leukemoid reaction:
(1) white blood cell count > 50,000 per µL
(2) left shift in the myeloid series in the peripheral blood with maturation
(3) may show occasional myeloblasts in severe reaction
(4) myeloid hyperplasia with maturation and without excess of blasts in the bone marrow
(5) negative for molecular markers of myeloid leukemia - Philadelphia chromosome t(9;22), JAK2 V617F, other
Causes:
(1) paraneoplastic (nonhematologic or hematologic neoplasms)
(2) severe infection
(3) drugs or toxins
(4) severe hemorrhage
(5) severe alcoholic hepatitis
(6) other
