Description

British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.

Patient selection: initial clinical assessment

Severe manifestations:

(1) creatinine clearance < 50 mL per minute

(2) active urine sediment in uncentrifuged specimen (> 5 WBC per hpf OR > 5 RBC per hpf OR red blood cell casts, in the absence of urinary tract infection)

(3) active nephritis in renal biopsy

Other parameters:

(1) 24 hour urine protein in g per 24 hours

(2) protein by dipstick

(3) hypertension

(4) serum creatinine
