British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.
Patient selection: followup clinical assessment
Severe manifestations of nervous system involvement - any new or worse:
(1) impaired level of consciousness
(2) psychosis
(3) delirium or confusional state
(4) grand mal seizure
(5) stroke or stroke syndrome
(6) aseptic meningitis
(7) mononeuritis multiplex
(8) ascending or transverse myelitis
(9) peripheral or cranial neuropathy
(10) chorea
(11) cerebellar ataxia
Moderate manifestations of nervous system involvement - any new or worse:
(1) severe, unremitting headache
(2) organic depression
(3) chronic brain syndrome (pseudotumor cerebri, other)
(4) optic disc swelling on fundoscopic exam
(6) cytoid bodies (cotton wool spots) on fundoscopic exam
Moderate manifestations of nervous system involvement - any same or improving:
(1) impaired level of consciousness
(2) psychosis
(3) delirium or confusional state
(4) grand mal seizure
Mild manifestations of nervous system involvement:
(1) episodic migraine headaches - new or worse
Mild manifestations of nervous system involvement - any same or improving:
(1) stroke or stroke syndrome
(2) aseptic meningitis
(3) mononeuritis multiplex
(4) ascending or transverse myelitis
(5) peripheral or cranial neuropathy
(6) chorea
(7) cerebellar ataxia
