British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.
Manifestations seen in severe disease - one or both of the following:
(1) cardiac failure
(2) symptomatic effusion
Other manifestations include:
(1) pleuropericardial pain
(2) dyspnea
(3) friction rub
(4) progressive changes in lung fields seen on imaging studies
(5) progressive changes in heart size seen on imagng studies
(6) pericarditis or myocarditis
(7) cardiac arrhythmia or tachycardia not due to fever
(8) deterioration in lung function
(9) cytohistological evidence of inflammatory lung disease
where:
• Deterioration in lung function includes either a > 20% fall in function or function < 20% of expected.
