British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.
Severe manifestations of vasculitis:
(1) major cutaneous vasculitis (ulcerations, etc) with recent infarcts (within the past month)
(2) multiple episodes of thromboembolism (excluding strokes)
(3) major abdominal crisis due to vasculitis
Moderate manifestations of vasculitis:
(1) minor cutaneous vasculitis (urticaria, purpura, digital vasculitis, nailfold vasculitis)
(2) superficial phlebitis
(3) first episode of thromboembolism (excluding strokes)
(4) minor abdominal crisis due to vasculitis
where:
• Minor abdominal crisis is not in the original listing.
Mild manifestations of vasculitis:
(1) livedo reticularis
(2) Raynaud's phenomenon
