The ratio of lymphocytes to monocytes in the peripheral blood may have prognostic significance. This has been studied in a wide range of malignancies, infectious and cardiovascular diseases.
Parameters:
(1) percent lymphocytes, or absolute lymphocyte count per microliter
(2) percent monocytes, or absolute monocyte count per microliter
lymphocyte to monocyte ratio =
= (percent lymphocytes) / (percent monocytes)
Interpretation:
• The ratio may range from 0.4 to 12 or higher.
• An elevated ratio may be associated with a better prognosis in patients with cancer.
Causes of an elevated ratio:
(1) lymphopenia (includes malnutrition and certain infections)
(2) monocytosis
Causes of an elevated ratio:
(1) lymphocytosis
(2) monocytopenia
