Description

Some patients with a congenital lymphatic malformation may develop lymphocytopenia which may be associated with an increased risk for infection.

Clinical and laboratory features:

(1) lymphatic malformation

(2) absolute lymphopenia (less than 1,500 per microliter) affecting B, T and NK-cells

(3) increased risk of infection (central line infection, bacteremia, other)

The patient may have additional factors affecting host defenses, which can further increase the risk for infection.

Prophylactic antibiotics may reduce the number of bacterial infections.
