Description

Williams et al reported serum levels of cholesterol associated with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia at different cur-offs for family history and age. The authors are from the University of Utah. MEDPED is an acronym for Make Early Diagnosis to Prevent Early Death.

Parameters:

(1) serum concentration of total cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol in mg/dL

(2) family history of familial hypercholesterolemia

(3) age in years

If the patient's serum cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol exceeds the cut-off value then the patient should be evaluated for familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia.
