A patient who has been treated for chronic hepatitis C may enter the state of "MELD purgatory."
Features of MELD purgatory:
(1) The patient has advanced hepatitis C with elevated MELD score.
(2) The patient has a sustained viral response to antiviral therapy with a fall in the MELD score.
(3) The patient's quality of life and symptoms do not improve and remain poor.
(4) The patient has a decreased chance of receiving a liver transplant.
