Description

A miner may be at increased risk for disability related to knee function. Historically this was most often seen in coal miners. The risk may be reduced by the use ofmining automation.


Risk factors for knee dysfunction:

(1) kneeling, squatting and crawling

(2) repetitive heavy lifting, especially when kneeling

(3) failure to use knee pads

(4) blunt trauma to the knee

(5) longer duration of being a miner

 

Types of knee dysfunction:

(1) osteoarthritis

(2) meniscus tears
