Description

Minipuberty of infancy is associated with a transient activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis during the first few months of life.


Clinical features of minipuberty:

(1) An infant is less than 1 year of age.

(2) There is development of pubic and axillary hair.

(3) A female may experience breast enlargement and/or menstrual bleeding.

(4) A male may experience testicular and penile enlargement

 

Laboratory features:

(1) elevated serum testosterone in males and females

(2) elevated estradiol in females

 

The diagnosis requires exclusion of precocious puberty or other hormonal disorders.
