Martin et al reported criteria for classifying HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets). The authors are from the University of Mississipi in Jackson.
Patient selection: HELLP syndrome
Parameters:
(1) platelet count per microliter
(2) serum transaminases (AST or ALT) in IU/L
(3) serum LDH in IU/L
Severe (Class 3)
Moderate (Class 2)
Mild (Class 1)
Platelet Count
< 50,000 per µL
50,000 to 99,999 per µL
100,000 to 150,000 per µL
transaminase
>= 70 IU/L
>= 70 IU/L
40 to 69 IU/L
LDH
>= 600 IU/L
>= 600 IU/L
>= 600 IU/L
where:
• The platelet count appears to be the main metric used for classifying.
Severe HELLP is associated with slower recovery and a higher rate of requiring plasma exchange.
