Description

Some patients undergoing operative repair of a rotator cuff tear will experience a retear, which is associated with a worse clinical outcome. Le et al developed a model for predicting the chance of a retear. The authors are from the University of New South Wales in Australia.

Patient selection: operative repair of a rotator cuff tear

Outcome: retear within 6 months of surgery

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient at surgery in years

(2) tear thickness in percent

(3) anteroposterior (AP) tear length in cm

(4) mediolateral (ML) tear length in cm

(5) tear size area in square cm (on page 1139 given as AP tear length times ML tear length)

(6) operative time in minutes

X =

= (0.0392 * (age)) + (0.0272 * (tear thickness)) + (anteroposterior tear length) + (0.765 * (mediolateral tear length)) - (0.17 * (tear area)) + (0.0184 * (operative time)) - 9.715

probability of retear =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))
