Description

Spyropoulos et al evaluated hospitalized medical patients for the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). A simple model using 4 parameters can identify a patient at increased risk at the time of hospital admission. The study was performed by the International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE) investigators.

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) past history of thromboembolism

(3) known thrombophilia

(4) current cancer

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 8

• The higher the score the greater the risk of venous thromboembolism within the next 3 months.
