Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare tumor that probably arises from the olfactory neuroepithelium. Kadish et al proposed a staging system for esthesioneuroblastoma. This was modified by Morita et al.
Parameters:
(1) primary site
(2) extension
Primary Site |
Extension |
Stage |
nasal cavity or cranial nerve |
none |
A |
paranasal sinus (maxillary, ethmoid, frontal, sphenoid, accessory) |
none |
B |
superior nasopharynx |
into paranasal sinus |
B |
nasal cavity |
into sinuses or immediately adjacent structures |
B |
as above |
direct invasion beyond sinuses; orbital and/or intracranial invasion |
C |
as above |
metastases to cervical lymph node or distant organ |
D |
where:
• The original Kadish classification used Stages A, B and C, with no distinct group (D) for nodal or distant metastases.
The patient's prognosis is worse with the higher stages.
