British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) developed an index for evaluating disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The index is based on several findings, each of which is categorized. The authors are from multiple universities in Great Britain.
Severe mucocutaneous manifestions include:
(1) extensive mucosal ulcerations
(2) angio-edema
(3) severe maculopapular eruption
(4) severe discoid eruption
(5) severe bullous eruption
where:
• A severe eruption involves any of the following: disability, scarring, and/or > 22% of body surface area involved.
Moderate mucocutaneous manifestions include:
(1) malar erythema
(2) mild maculopapular eruption
(3) panniculitis
(4) localized active discoid lesions (includes lupus profundus)
(5) severe active alopecia
(6) subcutaneous nodules
(7) pernio skin lesions

Mild mucocutaneous manifestions include:
(1) peri-ungual erythema
(2) swollen fingers
(3) sclerodactyly
(4) calcinosis
(5) telangiectasia
(6) mild alopecia
(7) small mucosal ulcerations
