Mucoepidermoid carcinoma can very rarely arise in the conjunctiva. This is an aggressive tumor which can invade ocular structures and recur if not completely excised.
The diagnosis is made by a biopsy showing a cancer with a mucoepidermoid pattern with epithelial and mucin-secreting cells. Mucin-secreting cells may have a glandular pattern or have signet ring cells.
Risk factors for poor outcome:
(1) delay in diagnosis
(2) failure to perform a wide, local excision
(3) positive resection margins
