A patient with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) may be predisposed to mucormycosis.
Patient selection: mucormycosis
Pathogenesis: uncertain: may be related to relative immunocompromised status, acidosis, hyperglycemia. The presence of mucormycosis may contribute to the ketoacidosis.
Mucormycosis may present as:
(1) rhino-orbital cerebral
(2) pulmonary infiltrate, which may mimic a tumor
(3) disseminated infection
(4) isolated involvement of an organ
(5) gastrointestinal
Poor prognostic factors:
(1) cerebral involvement
(2) failure to control the diabetic ketoacidosis
(3) delay in starting specific therapy
(4) visceral perforation
(5) HIV or immunodeficiency
