Description

Subcutaneous deposits of calcium urate can rarely be found on the nose.

Clinical features:

(1) painless papules or nodules on the nose that may be described as a "hump"

(2) the lesion may be normochromic, yellowish or erythematous

(3) the mass may become ulcerated

(4) the mass consists of deposition of crystals consistent with calcium urate

The deposits may be more common in the midline at the junction between the nasal bone and the upper cartilage.

The diagnosis is easier if there is a history of gout.

Other conditions such as relapsing polychondritis need to be excluded.

Complications:

(1) erosion of the nasal bones

(2) infection
