Description

The Neoadjuvant Rectal (NAR) score can be used to evaluate a patient with rectal cancer undergoing preoperative chemoradiation followed by surgery.

Patient selection: rectal cancer surgically resected after preoperative chemoradiation

Parameters:

(1) pN stage (0, 1 or 2)

(2) clinical T stage (from 1 to 4)

(3) pathologic T stage (from 0 to 4)

Parameter

Points

pN stage

5 * (N stage)

clinical T stage

- 3 * (T stage)

pathologic T stage

3 * (T stage)

subscore =

= SUM(points for all of the parameters) + 12

NAR =

= ((subscore)^2) / 9.61

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0 (pN0, cT 4, pT 0)

• maximum score: 100 (pN 2, cT 1, pT 4)

• The higher the score the worse the prognosis.
