The British Medical Research Council (MRC) developed a scale for grading neurologic function and deficits.
Parameters:
(1) extent of the neurologic deficit
(2) functional ability
Neurologic Deficit |
Functional Ability |
Grade |
none |
normal, fully functional |
1 |
mild |
able to perform useful work |
2 |
moderate |
moderate impairment |
3 |
severe |
very limited |
4 |
extreme, unable to make conscious responses |
no useful function |

where:
• A patient with Grade 3 changes may have difficulty moving limbs, moderate paresis or visual field defects.
• A patient with Grade 4 changes may be unable to use her/his limbs, have markedly reduced vision or have gross speech abnormalities.
Purpose: To grade a patient's neurologic status using the Medical Research Council (MRC) Neurologic Scale.
