The New York criteria for ankylosing spondylitis is a modification of the Rome criteria as proposed at the CIOMS Symposium in New York during 1966. It combines both clinical criteria and radiographic findings of the sacroiliac joint.
Clinical criteria
(1) Limitation of motion of the lumbar spine in all 3 planes (anterior flexion, lateral flexion, extension). Skin markings to aid in the examination are shown in the Figure on page 356 of Moll (1973).
(2) A history of pain or the presence of pain at the dorsolumbar junction or in the lumbar spine.
(3) Limitation of chest expansion to 1 inch (2.5 cm) or less, measured at the level of the fourth intercostal space.
