Nodular colloid degeneration is an uncommon skin condition with nodular deposits of colloid in the skin.
It is most often seen in middle aged to elderly men.
Lesions tend to occur in sun-exposed skin such as face, scalp, ears, neck and hands
Clinical features:
(1) small yellow, purple, or erythematous plaques or nodules
(2) lesions may be pruritic
A biopsy of a skin lesion shows well-circumscribed masses of an amorphous material that stains red on routine H&E stains.
(1) The material stains negative for amyloid.
(2) The material stains positive for elastin on Verhoeff-van Gieson stain.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) xanthomata
(2) cutaneous amyloidosis
