Zheng et al identified cirrhosis in a patient with chronic viral hepatitis based on laboratory and ultrasound findings. The authors are from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhour, Shandong University, Tianjin Infectious Disease Hospital and the Wenzhou Third People's Hospital in China.
Patient selection: chronic viral hepatitis
Criteria for cirrhosis - all of the following:
(1) AST to platelet ratio of Wai et al > 2 (see below)
(2) small-sized liver by ultrasonography with or without ascites; with or without splenomegaly
(3) serum albumin < 35 g/L without another explanation (nephrotic syndrome, GI loss)
AST to platelet raito =
= ((serum AST) / (upper limit of normal)) / (coefficient for platelet count in 10^9) * 100
