The volume of a spleen can be normalized based on height or body surface area.
Parameters:
(1) splenic volume in mL
(2) weight in kilograms
(3) body surface area (BSA) in square meters
normalized splenic volume for height =
= (splenic volume in mL) / (body weight in kilograms)
normalized splenic volume for BSA =
= (splenic volume in mL) / (body surface area in square meters)
Simpson et al found that normal adults had a normalized splenic volume of 2.5 +/- 0.8 mL per kg.
