Thallium poisoning can have significant long-term effects on the eyes and vision.
Thallium can result in:
(1) toxic optic neuropathy/neuritis
(2) blepharoptosis
(3) lens opacities with catarracts
(4) ophthalmolplegia
(5) iridocyclitis
(6) retinal damage
Consequences of thallium poisoning include:
(1) diminished contrast sensitivity
(2) defects in color vision
(3) central scotoma
(4) decreased visual acuity with potential for blindness
(5) impaired visual-evoked potentials (VEP)
Impaired vision may be permanent.
