The Papageno effect from social media is the mirror image of the Werther effect on suicide occurrence.
Papageno refers to a character in Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" who was persuaded not to commit suicide.
Features of the Papageno effect:
(1) a person with suicidal thoughts
(2) the person is suggestive
(3) the person is exposed to a media report of how someone (usually a celebrity) used one or more behaviors to overcome a suicidal crisis
(4) the person responds positively to the media report and survives the crisis
The mirror opposite is the Werther effect, in which the person commits a copycat suicide to a suicide reported in the media. With the Papageno effect there is copycat survival.
