Patients with uncomplicated benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can be assessed using a system based on the patient's indications of how his voiding and sexual functions are affected. The scores can be used both to evaluate a specific patient's response to therapy and to compare outcomes from interventions based on matching patients by scores.
Question pairs composed of both symptom and bother responses:
(1) 12 voiding question pairs
(2) 3 sexual question pairs
Responses:
(1) symptom points: 4 responses indicating existence of symptom, graded from 0 to 3
(2) bother points: 4 responses indicating impact that the symptom has on the patient's life, graded from 0 to 3
product score for each question =
= (symptom points) * (bother points)
voiding total score =
= SUM(product score for 12 voiding question pairs)
sexual total score =
= SUM(product score for 3 sexual question pairs)
voiding symptom score =
= SUM(symptom points for 12 voiding questions)
voiding bother score =
= SUM(bother points for 12 voiding questions)

The sexual total score is used only to compare the patient before and after treatment.
Limitations:
• The system is intended for use in patients without serious complications of benign prostatic hyperplasia such as recurrent infection, bladder stones or renal impairment.
• The system assumes that all of the symptoms and bother are due to effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
