Women should be encouraged to exercise before, during and after pregnancy. Being sedentary should be discouraged.
Benefits of exercise:
(1) improved weight control
(2) improved mood
(3) reduction in the rate of some obstetrical problems (preterm birth, Cesarean section, etc)
Recommendation for low-risk pregnancy: at least 150 minutes per week (20-30 minutes on most days) of moderate activity
Exercise may combine aerobic and strength-conditioning.
Precautions:
(1) The woman with contraindications for exercise should not exceed any restrictions.
(2) Exercise with a high risk for falls and other trauma should be avoided.
(3) Over-exertion should be avoided.
