Orchard workers are exposed to a range of pollens which can trigger allergic reactions. Hayashi et al evaluated pollen-related symptoms in pear orchard farmers. The authors are from Toyama Prefectural University and University of Toyama.
Pollinosis refers to:
(1) allergic symptoms related to pollen, including allergic rhinitis, allergic bronchitis, and allergic conjunctivitis
(2) serum IgE to one or more pollens
Source of pollen:
(1) normal tree pollen
(2) artificial pollination
(3) grass beneath the trees
(4) other trees nearby
The risk of pollinosis is greater in older farmers who have been exposed to many times.
Prevention of pollinosis:
(1) wearing a facial mask
(2) undergrowth maintenance (including mowing of grass beneath the tree)
(3) improving labor conditions to reduce pollen exposure
By identifying the specific IgE sensitivities it is possible to target important sources of the pollen or other allergens.
