Certain clinical and laboratory findings are associated with poor outcome in patients with amebic liver abscess(es).
Factors associated with poor prognosis in patients with amebic liver disease:
(1) multiple abscesses
(2) volume of abscess liver cavity > 500 mL
(3) elevated right hemidiaphragm or pleural effusion on chest imaging studies
(4) encephalopathy
(5) bilirubin > 3.5 mg/dL
(6) anemia with hemoglobin < 8 g/dL
(7) hypoalbuminemia, with serum albumin < 2 g/dL
(8) diabetes mellitus
where:
• If multiple abscesses are present, the sum of the volumes is used to give a total volume.
• The volume of an abscess was taken as an ellipsoid sphere = 4/3 * PI() * ((diameter in x axis) / 2) * ((diameter in y axis) / 2) * ((diameter in z axis) / 2)
