Fusobacterium bacteremia may be associated with thrombosis of the portal and/or hepatic veins. This may be somewhat analogous to Lemierre Syndrome of the oropharynx.
Organism: Fusobacterium nucleatum, possibly other species
Clinical features:
(1) positive blood culture for F. nucleatum
(2) thrombosis of the portal and/or hepatic veins
(3) variable thrombosis in other veins
(4) variable presence of hepatic abscesses
(5) variable presence of a portal in the gastrointestinal tract (ulcerating adenocarcinoma, inflammatory bowel disease, other)
(6) variable mesenteric adenitis
