Description

A patient undergoing percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of a tumor may develop the Post-Radiofrequency Ablation Syndrome (PRFAS).


 

Features of PRFAS:

(1) The onset is after the procedure and peaks on day 3-5.

(2) Symptoms may include combinations of fever, pain and/or flu-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, malaise, myalgias).

(3) Some patients may have symptoms severe enough to limit activities (disabling).

(4) Most cases have resolved by 10 days after the procedure.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) influenza or other viral infection

(2) abscess at the treatment site
