Some patients undergoing percutaneous ablation of a tumor may develop "flu-like" symptoms following the procedure.
The onset of symptoms may be 1 to 14 days after the procedure.
Clinical findings:
(1) low-grade fever
(2) pain
(3) nausea
(4) vomiting
(5) malaise
(6) myalgia
(7) chills
Symptoms tended to last a few days but could take up to two weeks to resolve.
Risk factors for the syndrome:
(1) large tumor volume ablated
(2) large tissue volume ablated
(3) if performed on the liver, a large increase in the serum AST after the proceedure
Differential diagnosis:
(1) bacterial infection of the necrotic tissue
(2) influenza or other infection
(3) symptoms associated with the tumor
