Prior to anesthesia a child is shown 3 pictures. The following day the recall of the pictures and their contents is tested. This allows a semiquantitative measure of amnesia for the preanesthetic period.
Pictures:
(1) dog
(2) tree
(3) car
Scoring:
(1) 1 point for each picture subject remembered (from 0 to 3 points)
(2) 1 point for each picture content remembered (from 0 to 3 points)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0 points, indicating poor recall
• maximum score: 6 points, indicating excellent recall
Limitations:
• A child with poor memory is likely to have low score irregardless of anesthetic effect.
