Acute pancreatitis may be a complication of partial pancreatectomy. The authors are from multiple institutions from around the world and members of the International Study Group for Pancreatic Surgery (ISGPS).
PPAP is an acute inflammatory condition of the pancreatic remnant following partial pancreatectomy. Onset is within the first 3 postoperative days.
Clinical
Laboratory
Imaging
Term
normal postoperative recovery
elevated serum amylase
consistent with postoperative course; often not performed
postoperative hyperamylasemia
clinically relevant downturn in condition
sustained elevation (>= 48 hours) in serum amylase
abnormal imaging findings
Grade B
single or multiple organ failures lasting >= 48 hours
sustained elevation in serum amylase
as for Grade B plus more extensive pancreatic necrosis
Grade C
Abnormal imaging findings may include localized or diffuse inflammatory enlargement of the pancreatic remnant, inflammation of peri-pancreatic fat, fluid collections, and focal necrosis.
Complications of pancreatectomy may include pancreatic fistula (POPF) and hemorrhage (PPH).
If surgery is performed for complications in a patient with Grade B PPAP, then designated Grade C.
