Description

Becher et al reported factors associated with functional recovery following major surgery performed on an older adult. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Yale University.

Patient selection: age >= 70 years, status post major surgery

Outcome: functional recovery at 6 months

Predictors of functional recovery:

(1) being non-frail (HR 1.6)

(2) having elective surgery (HR 1.7)

Predictors of functional impairment:

(1) hearing impairment (HR recovery 0.86)

(2) greater post-operative disability (HR recovery 0.87)
