Chan et al developed a score to evaluate a child who has had contact with a patient with tuberculosis. This can help to identify a child who is at greater risk of developing tuberculosis. The authors are from National Taiwan University.
Patient selection: child from 0 to 12 years of age in contact with a person with tuberculosis
Outcome: tuberculosis within 3 years
Parameters:
(1) diameter of induration in mm in contact
(2) AFB smear result for index patient with tuberculosis
(3) incidence level for tuberculosis where the index patient lives
(4) sex of index patient

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 8
• The higher the score the greater the risk of developing tuberculosis within 3 years.
