Description

Adam et al identified factors associated with complete pathologic response to preoperative chemotherapy in a patient with liver metastases from a colorectal carcinoma. The authors are from Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris Hopital Paul Brousse, Universite Paris-Sud at Villejuif and the University of Utrecht.

Complete pathologic response = complete absence of viable cancer cells on pathologic examination.

Various chemotherapeutic regimens were given (see Patient Selection, page 1636). Metastases to the liver were surgically resected.

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient

(2) maximum size of the metastases at diagnosis in cm

(3) serum CEA at diagnosis

(4) objective radiologic response
