Predictors of Chang et al for 1-Year Readmission for an Acute Exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD)
Purpose: To evaluate a patient in the hospital with an acute exacerbation for COPD (AECOPD) for predictors of readmission based on the study of Chang et al.
Chang et al identified predictors for readmission for an acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing.
Patient selection: Chinese adult admitted for AECOPD
Parameters from the multivariate analysis:
(1) GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) category
(2) serum C-reactive protein (CRP) at discharge in mg/L
GOLD Category
serum CRP in mg/L

Additional risk factors from the univariate analysis:
(1) advanced age (mean 68 years for readmission, range 62 to 75, use >= 68 in implementation)
(2) >= 2 AECOPD in the past year
(3) FEV1 less than 50% of predicted
(4) COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score >= 10
