Khader et al reported a systematic review on predictors affecting the response of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis to a biologic. The number of predictors is small and the individual effect is relatively small. The authors are from the University of Toledo in Ohio.
Patient selection: rheumatoid arthritis
Predictors of positive response to therapy with a biologic:
(1) anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (OR 2.5)
Factors associated with a poor response to therapy with a biologic:
(1) baseline HAQ score >= 2 (OR 0.62)
(2) female gender (OR 0.66)
Other factors (age >= 50 years, current smoking, DAS28 at diagnosis >= 3.2, and ESR > 20 mm Hg) were associated with a poor response to therapy but the OR were low.
