Laughlin et al evaluated patients undergoing revision surgery for a total hip arthroplasty. They identified predictors for postoperative mortality. The authors are from Fundren Orthopedic Research Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, and Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston.
Patient selection: revision surgery for total hip arthroplasty
Mortality rate: 2% at 2 years
The greatest risk of mortality was seen in patients with periprosthetic fracture (rate 7.5%).
The second leading cause was dislocation or instability (rate 5%).
Other predictors:
(1) polyethylene wear (3%)
(2) osteolysis (3.6%)
(3) mechanical loosening (1.9%)
(4) metallosis or recalled prosthesis (1.4%)
The risk was increased in males and greater age.
