Mari et al identified factors predictive of postoperative complications following a partial nephrectomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Italy.
Patient selection: partial nephrectomy
Postoperative complications included: hemorrhage requiring transfusion, urinary fistulas, acute renal failure, pneumothorax, respiratory complications, cardiac complications, deep vein thrombosis
Predictors from multivariate analysis:
(1) ECOG score 1 to 4
(2) preoperative anemia
(3) open surgical approach
The risk for complications increase with the number of risk factors.
