Muszynska et al identified predictors for incidental gallbladder cancer being found in a gallbladder being removed for benign disease. The authors are from Lund University, Skane University Hospital, and Linkoping University in Sweden.
Patient selection: cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease
Outcome: occult adenocarcinoma
Predictors of occult cancer:
(1) older age (mean age 70 +/- 11 years, versus benign with mean age 54 +/- 16 years)
(2) female gender
(3) previous cholecystitis
(4) one of the following:
(4a) acute cholecystitis without jaundice
(4b) absence of acute cholecystitis with jaundice
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve was 0.82 for the preoperative model.
