Pallares-Mendez et al reported factors predictive of nephrectomy following renal trauma. The authors are from multiple institutions in Mexico.
Patient selection: trauma patient with injury to the kidney
Predictive factors for nephrectomy from logistic regression analysis:
(1) blood lactate >= 4 mmol/L
(2) inadequate response to intravenous fluids
(3) renal trauma Grade 4 or 5
A hematoma >= 25 mm was more common in patients undergoing nephrectomy.
