Schmidt et al identified predictors for a poor outcome for an extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infant. The authors are from the Trial of Indomethacin Prophylaxis in Preterms (TIPP) investigators from Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
Patient selection: preterm with birthweight 500-999 grams
Outcomes at 18 months: cerebral palsy, cognitive delay. severe hearing loss and/or bilateral blindness
Predictors:
(1) evidence of brain injury on ultrasonography (odds ratio 3.7)
(2) bronchopulmonary dysplasia (odds ratio 2.4)
(3) severe retinopathy of prematurity (odds ratio 3.1)
