Shah et al evaluated outcomes for the recipient twin in the twin-twin transfusion syndrome. The recipient twin may develop a cardiomyopathy which may affect the clinical course. The authors are from the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Atrioventricular valve (mitral and/or tricuspid) regurgitation is associated with negative outcomes.
One proposal is to upstage Quintero stage I or II for the recipient twin if there is evidence of cardiac findings on echocardiography.
