Description

Song et al reported risk factors and clinical features of pneumothorax associated with paragonimiasis. These can help to identify a patient at risk who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Jeonbuk National University in South Korea.

Patient selection: age >= 19 years (adult), with pulmonary paragonimiasis

Symptomatic paragonimiasis is associated with pulmonary disease such as pneumonia and pleuritis.

Predictors of pneumothorax:

(1) chest pain (OR 8.2)

(2) intrapulmonary lesion or lesions (OR 8.9)

(3) asthma (OR 8.1)

If one or more of these predictors is present, then the patient should be monitored for pneumothorax.
